France supported the British seizure of the Canal but the
Soviets supported Egypt. The French and English troops gained control over the
area surrounding the Suez Canal. The Soviet Union under the leadership of
Nikita Khrushchev even supplied the Egyptians with arms. This was in a bid to
gain influence in the Middle East.
