Simplify the following:

x - 4 x - 5 + 8

Grouping like terms, x - 4 x - 5 + 8 = (8 - 5) + (x - 4 x):

(8 - 5) + (x - 4 x)

x - 4 x = -3 x:

-3 x + (8 - 5)

8 - 5 = 3:

3 - 3 x

Factor 3 out of 3 - 3 x:

Answer: 3 (1 - x) or 3 - 3x
