Some costs of American Slave owners is to maintain slaves and keep them in good health which costs them a lot more expenses assuming they the slave owners don't have barn animals to take care of as well.
The gain (which is basically terrible but please forgive me) is that slave owners get free manual labor as well as other types of horrific  workmanship.
