This equation is solved by taking the number infront of x (in this case an invisible 1) and the last number (4) and multiplying

then split that up so that the two numbers equal the middle number when added and the last number when multiplies

(x + 2) (x + 2)

This may be re-written as (x+2)2=25.

So x+2=±5.

So x=3 or −7.
