A permanent increase in size and dry mass is known as growth. Growth is not to be confused with the word development, which typically means an increase in complexity. When someone or something experiences growth, it becomes larger. However, the growth does not necessarily have to be permanent. For example, if you get an ear piercing infection, it can cause your ear to swell/grow. When the infection goes away, your ear will shrink/go back to its regular size.
